Scottish National Surfing Championships 2022

In loving memory of Iain Masson

With a hiatus from all competition in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2021 event having to be postponed until later in the year due to ongoing government restrictions; we are pleased to release the poster for this year’s Scottish National Surfing Championships, which will return to Easter Weekend, the traditional annual weekend of the event, for 2022 (15-17 April).  The event poster features the late Iain Masson (7x Scottish National Surfing Champion) surfing in at Brims Ness by Thurso in the 80s (photo courtesy of Andy Bennetts)

This historic event has been taking place on the North Coast of Scotland since 1973 – most likely before any competitors who will participate in the event were even born – and will see the best Scottish talent battle it out for national titles on the Caithness coast. The youngest ever, and reigning, Scottish National Open Men’s Champion champion Craig McLachlan (NSSC) will be looking to defend his title and he’ll be eager to prove that last year’s victory was no fluke by backing up his maiden title in 2022; still as a junior. Phoebe Strachan (NSSC) will also be looking to go back to back and solidify her place in the history books with a 3rd Open Women’s title this Spring. With last year’s announcement from reining Scottish National Longboard Champion Malcolm Findlay (BSC) that he intended to retire from competition, could this leave the door open for last year’s runner up Chris Clarke (NSSC), or even a new champion? Mark ‘Scratch’ Cameron (BSC), a man who is at this point gaining titles in order to break records, will also return to Thurso with hopes of defending his Masters title.

With the sad news of the passing of 7x Scottish National Open Men’s Champion, Scottish surfing pioneer and SSF honorary member Iain Masson earlier this year, it is only fitting that this event honours Iain’s life and is named in his memory. Iain was a man who did so much for Scottish surfing and not only held numerous National Masters and Longboard titles but also the record for the most Open Men’s titles – he will be sorely missed by the surfing community and his impact on the sport in Scotland will never be forgotten.

A ceremony in Iain’s memory will be co-ordinated as part of the event.
