SurfDek Limited Launches the World’s First Purpose-Built Adaptive Surfboard Seat

United Kingdom – SurfDek Limited today announces the launch of the HALO, the world’s first purpose-built surfboard seat designed specifically for adaptive surfing. Designed and manufactured in the UK, the HALO represents a significant advancement in accessibility, safety and performance for both disabled and able-bodied surfers.

Developed in collaboration with adaptive surf communities and tested in real-world conditions, the HALO addresses long-standing limitations of improvised and DIY seating solutions. The lightweight, ergonomic design delivers full upper-body support, improved rider stability, and enhanced manoeuvrability, allowing surfers and their support teams to have a greater experience in the water.

Russell Field, Director of SurfDek Limited says; “Previous DIY solutions using vehicle seats are often heavy, restrictive, and required specialist boards or complex modifications. We wanted to design a seat that was made for purpose – ergonomic, safe, versatile, transportable and accessible to as many people as possible.”

Purpose-built for Adaptive Surfing

The HALO features integrated head, torso and leg support, designed using calculated ergonomic angles inspired by high-performance engineering. This optimised riding position lowers the centre of effort, improving balance and control in wave conditions. The monocoque, one-piece construction ensures strength while maintaining an exceptionally lightweight build.

Key design features include:

  • Full upper-body support with lateral head stabilisation for increased rider safety
  • Extended leg support designed to work with the board for balance and comfort
  • Ergonomically positioned rider handles for control and confidence
  • Multiple support-team handles for safe launches, recoveries and transfers
  • Lightweight construction for easy transport, including use with inflatable boards
  • No permanent board modifications required – no drilling or specialist expertise needed
  • Adjustable positioning along compatible boards for varied conditions and riders
  • Interchangeable use across suitably sized boards, reducing costs and increasing flexibility
  • Non-slip SurfDek foam surface for improved grip in wet environments
  • Smooth, rounded construction with protected fixings for enhanced safety
  • Hydrodynamic shape allowing water flow to reduce resistance and improve handling

Accessible, Flexible and Cost-Effective

Unlike many DIY adaptations, the HALO is designed to work with widely available large surfboards or stand-up paddle boards. This flexibility allows organisations and individuals to replace boards easily and affordably without compromising performance.

The lightweight and compact design also simplifies transport and storage, enabling use by individuals, surf schools and adaptive programmes alike.

Designed and Manufactured in the UK

Each HALO seat is manufactured in the United Kingdom using premium marine-grade materials, including stainless steel, specialised foams, polymers and adhesives. The product includes the surfboard seat along with all necessary fixings and fittings.

By delivering a purpose-built solution for adaptive surfing, SurfDek Limited aims to broaden participation and create more inclusive opportunities in the sport.
